Big lots, big kitchens

Helotes houses sit on more land than most of Bexar County and the kitchens tend to follow. Long runs of base cabinet, an island somebody eats breakfast at, and a view out the back that a bad layout will block for the next thirty years. We draw those rooms around the window and work the storage in around it.

The finishes people ask for out here sit between the hill country and the city. A stained perimeter with a painted island, or the reverse of that, comes up in half our first visits. We spray both in the same booth in the same week, so the two tones are chosen against each other instead of two months apart under different lights.

Garages, workshops and the room next door

Plenty of our Helotes work is the room beside the kitchen. A butler pantry, a bar that serves the back porch, or a wall of cabinet in a garage that became a real workshop years ago. Garage cabinets get the same plywood boxes with a harder finish on them, because that room gets hot and things get dropped in it.

Out on the wooded lots, dust and cedar pollen find their way inside every spring no matter what you do. Drawer boxes with a finished interior wipe out in a second, which sounds like a small thing until you have owned raw particleboard drawers through one Texas cedar season.
