New doors on sound boxes

If the layout already works and the boxes are solid, refacing buys you a new kitchen for less wood and less time. We will tell you honestly when it is the wrong call.

When refacing is the right call

Refacing keeps your boxes and replaces everything you look at. New doors and drawer fronts in the wood and style you choose, new veneer across the face frames, new hinges and slides behind them. In a Stone Oak house built in 2003 the boxes are usually plywood or decent particleboard and perfectly sound. It is the honey oak raised panel doors that make the room feel twenty years old, and those are exactly what comes off.

Time is the other reason people choose it. The boxes stay put, so the counters stay, the plumbing stays and the kitchen keeps working for most of the job. Once the doors are built, a refacing job is on and off in about a week, against four to six weeks for a full custom set.

  • New doors and drawer fronts in your wood and style
  • Face frames veneered to match the doors
  • Soft close hinges and new drawer slides
  • New drawer boxes where the old ones are worn out
  • Toe kick, end panels and crown replaced to match

When we tell you to replace instead

Refacing does nothing for a layout that does not work. If the fridge door blocks a drawer, if the corner cabinet swallows everything you put in it, or if you want an island where there is no island, new doors will not fix any of it. We say so on the first visit, before you have paid anybody anything.

The boxes have to be sound as well. Water damage under a sink, a shelf that sags in the middle, particleboard swollen along the bottom edge, joints stapled together that have worked loose. We open a few doors, look at the sides and the backs and give you a straight answer. Good doors on a failing box is money thrown away twice.

It costs less because there is less wood and less labor in it, and how much less depends on the size of the kitchen and the door you pick. We quote both so you can read the two numbers next to each other.

Yes. The doors and the veneer are new, so painted white over old oak boxes is normal work for us. The inside of the box stays whatever it was, and most people never think about it again.

Often, yes. Converting a door cabinet to drawers inside the same box is a common add on, and roll out shelves fit most base cabinets without any changes to the face frame.

About a week for a normal kitchen once the doors are built. The first day or two is veneer on the frames, then the doors and the hardware go on.

Not by default. The inside of the box stays as it is, and most people never think about it again. We can do the interiors, and it adds time and cost.

Yes, and it is worth doing together. Same doors, same finish batch, one trip, and the bathrooms stop looking like the kitchen they used to match.
